The complex processes involved in exploring for hydrocarbons continuously yield large volumes of data, driving the need for smarter approaches to data integration and interpretation. Data interoperability is critical to optimizing the accuracy of reservoir characterization while at the same time maximizing the productivity of asset teams. Many E&P organizations operate in multi-vendor environments, choosing the software that best matches the needs of their users and the play being characterized. To meet the challenges which arise when processing large amounts of geoscientific data, we developed GVERSE™ Connect, a GeoGraphix© plugin which addresses the need for data interoperability by enabling efficient data exchange between Petrel™ and GeoGraphix.
GeoGraphix is an integrated interpretation system that supports large multidisciplinary work groups simultaneously in a single project. It is built on a powerful relational database capable of storing a wide range of well data from formation tops, logs, deviation surveys and completions, to tubing and casing information. Working in network projects, interpreters use their own sources to pick faults and horizons for building subsurface maps while still sharing data across the asset team. The ability of GeoGraphix to support many users and large data volumes ranging from 50K to 500K wells makes it an excellent data repository for reservoir modeling.
The GVERSE Connect plugin allows reservoir modelers to carve out smaller datasets in GeoGraphix and transfer them to Petrel for reservoir characterization and modeling. Because reservoir modeling requires a robust data management system capable of storing large amounts of data, the combination of GeoGraphix for data storage and Petrel for modeling coupled with GVERSE Connect for data exchange permits asset teams to more accurately characterize their reservoirs with information collected from all members of the team.
