ESRI ArcGIS is a very powerful geographic information system for working with maps and different types of geographic information. GeoGraphix users can take advantage of the free ESRI ArcGIS layers data available in GeoAtlas. By installing and configuring the GeoGraphix third party tool, the interpreter can have access to different ESRI ArcGIS tools such as: ESRI Layer Connect, ArcSDE direct DataBase connection, ArcGIS online, and many others.
Many users load well data, 2D and/or 3D seismic data, lease information, cultural and many other types of data in a layer and sometimes an easy way to verify that the information is on the correct location is to display a satellite image as a backdrop. In GeoAtlas (after installing the third party tool) the interpreter can go to File >> Import >> ESRI ArcGIS >> ArcGIS Server Layer Connect and the ESRI ArcGIS Server Data Source Selection window will open.
On the ArcGIS Server Data Source Selection window, under the URL the user can type http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services to connect to the ESRI ArcGIS server, where all the free images are stored. The user can add a name for the layer and click on Get Layers to get a list of layers and select any of the images to display on the map after clicking Next and Finish.
The ESRI satellite image will display on the map helping the interpreter to verify the wells locations or analyze the terrain, checking cultural information, etc. The image is not saved on the database and will display as long as the interpreter has an internet connection.
Linking ESRI ArcGIS with GeoAtlas tools will push your interpretation data and results presentation to a different level. Free data is always good and great free data is even better!
